Activities

Activities

We offer the following activities for your enjoyment while you are staying at Cricket Camp.

Groups of about 10 are ideal for most activities for each one-hour session. All of the activities are offered by the campsite throughout the year, and are available during the evening and at weekends, weather permitting.  Please note that we are no longer able to provide qualified activity instructors to run archery, climbing, abseiling, tomahawks and rifle shooting sessions, you will need to find your own appropriately qualified instructor to run these activities. We will require instructors to provide a copy of their Adventurous Activity Permit or activity qualification before we can confirm activity bookings for climbing, abseiling, archery or rifle shooting.

Canoeing & Kayaking

Canoeing and kayaking sessions are available at our Itchen South District Scout Canoe Centre based at Lakeside Country Park, Eastleigh, Southampton approximately half a mile north of Junction 5 on the M27. This provides non-tidal facilities on a lake complex where we carry out the majority of our canoeing, which is classified Scout B1.  All Canoe Centre instructors hold the appropriate Scout Association Adventurous Activity Permits.

You are also welcome to bring your own boats.

If you have your own boats and qualified instructors there is access to the River Hamble within the River Hamble Country Park, at most times of the tide, it's classified Scout B1 (tidal).

In addition to the above, our neighbours at the QE2 Activity Centre, have kindly agreed to hire their paddlesports equipment out to Scout & Guide groups using Cricket Camp (weekends and school holidays). Their kit is stored in a compound on the River Hamble within the country park itself. They have five single and five double 'sit on' kayaks as well as 6 open (Canadian) canoes. The hire of the equipment comes with buoyancy aids and paddles. Instructors running sessions using the QE2 centre equipment must have a minimum of a British Canoe Padddlesports Level 1 Instructor qualification and evidence of running sessions on tidal waters. Please note that a Scout Adventurous Activity Permit alone will not suffice to run sessions with the QE2 centre equipment. There is also the option of requesting a QE2 centre instructor to run the session for you, but this is subject to availability and there is an additional charge of £35 per hour. The hire of the equipment etc is all bookable via Cricket Camp.

Pétanque

Cricket Camp is home to River Hamble Pétanque Club and the court is available to use with a club instructor.

Pétanque is a sport that falls into the category of boules sports, along with raffa, bocce, boule lyonnaise, lawn bowls and crown green bowling. All of these sports share something in common, in that players or teams play their boules/balls towards a target ball.

In Pétanque the objective is to score points by having boules closer to the target than your opponent after all boules have been thrown. This is achieved by projecting boules closer to the target, called a cochonnet, or by hitting the opponents' boules away from the target, while standing inside a circle with both feet on the ground.
